Four years ago, Lupita Nyongo’ acquired the rights to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s book: ‘Americanah’. It’s been pretty silent until recently, when it was reported that the best seller had found its writer. The one and only Danai Gurira who plays Okoye in Black Panther. The perfect news for the start of Women’s month.
This will mark the third time Nyong’o and Gurira work together. Prior to playing Nakia and Okoye, the powerful tag-team women protecting T’Challa who plays the king in Marvel’s Black Panther, Gurira wrote Eclipsed — the play that landed Nyong’o her very first Tony nomination. Talk about a winning collaboration.
The book which chronicles follows the story of two young Nigerian immigrants, Ifemelu and Obinze, who face a lifetime of struggle while their love story endures; was initially drafted to be made into a film. However, it will be adapted into a mini-series.
Nyong’o will be playing Ifemelu, and both she and Gurira will be executive producing the entire series. We expect more information on this exciting new project to be released in the coming months. We wait with bated breath!
